Say, "Hi, God." In this excerpt from his new book, Rick Hamlin shares how God's presence comes in surprising ways. By Rick Hamlin, New York, New York Some writers talk about the discipline of meditation and prayer as though you have to take a mental whip to the thoughts that swirl around in your head and corral them back to your intention. You’re supposed to seek a sublime emptiness to find the presence of God. BannerFans.com In all my years of praying I’ve never been very successful at that. The brain is too active (at least mine is). Instead I think you should be very forgiving about all the thoughts that enter your head when you pray. They are not just distractions. They might be the main event. This is what you came for, to hear what’s happening in your head. Listen to it. Pay attention. Ask God where you need help. Drop your worries in God’s lap. Look for where you are needed…. Some days on the subway, when I’m ready to close my eyes and pray, somebody will sit down next to me and I’ll know I need to talk. BannerFans.com “Hi, Rick. How are you?” says a neighbor I haven’t seen for a long time. I sigh. Don’t you see my Bible in my lap? Can’t you tell I’m busy? What arrogance! Maybe the thing God had in mind for me that morning was to listen to what my neighbor had to say. One June morning it was a guy I hadn’t seen much since our boys played Little League together. He’s a high school teacher and was a terrific coach for our boys. I loved hanging out with him, but I wasn’t in a chatty mood just now. “Hi, Rick,” he said. BannerFans.com “Hi, Bob,” I said, “how are you?” I reluctantly slid my Bible back into my gym bag. “I’m doing okay,” he said. We talked about our boys first, where they were, what they were doing. Small talk. But then he said, “I’m heading downtown to hand in my resignation. This is my last year of teaching.” “Wow,” I said. “What are you going to do next?” He talked about some of his plans and how he was feeling in the lurch, un-tethered, uncertain exactly what the future would hold. He seemed glad to share this milestone with someone, his last official day as a public schoolteacher. By the time I got off the subway I knew that conversation was more important than any of the prayer chitchat that would have taken place. “Hi, God,” you say, and God comes in the form of a friend who needs to talk. A Reflection of God's Love Marcia Alborghetti shares the importance of the cross in her prayer life. By Marci Alborghetti, New London, Connecticut My home is filled with symbols that remind me of how deeply God has manifested Himself in my life and that strengthen my faith in His presence. They help me to make prayer a part of every corner of my life. BannerFans.com Crosses hang in every room of my house: from my computer, from pictures of friends and family, from photos of my husband and me, from my jewelry holder. Whenever my husband Charlie travels, I slip a small cross in a rosewood box into his luggage. All of our crosses remind me of what Jesus gave for us, and those I’ve placed in various spots have specific meaning for me: The cross on my computer is a prayer for guidance in my work; the crosses on pictures of friends and those I love are prayers for their health and salvation; the crosses with my jewelry are reminders that I can carry a representation with me always; the cross that accompanies Charlie in all his travels keeps him close to Jesus and keeps us close together even when we have to say our prayers over the phone. BannerFans.com In the cross, we have the ultimate representation of how much God loved us, how much He was willing to endure and suffer to save us. When I see a cross, I pray,“Jesus, guide my life and my work. Words cannot express what I owe You; help me to express this debt in how I live, love, work. Protect and save the ones I love. Let those who are far away know that I care for them. Let those who are close see my love in my words and actions. Let my love be but a tiny reflection of Yours.” This article is excerpted from How to Pray When You Think You Can't. Are You in Need of Prayer? Great Things Happen When You Pray Norman Vincent Peale shares insight on how to tap into the incredible power of prayer. By Norman Vincent Peale Prayer is a mental process. When you think prayerfully, with Jesus as your guide, you break free from defeats. I believe any problem, any difficulty can be overcome through prayer. BannerFans.com The attitude that really leads to a life in all its fullness is that of a child walking with Him, loving Him, trusting Him, seeking to serve Him. When you develop a deep fundamental and powerful relationship to God, your whole mind and heart are ready to receive power from the Source. Some people think that a deep relationship with God must happen in a certain way. Nothing could be more false. Springtime comes in more ways than one. If it were standardized, if you saw the same blooms, the same flowers and trees wherever you looked, spring wouldn't have the glory that it does. BannerFans.com Christ comes like springtime in different ways to different human hearts. Sometimes He comes through feelings, sometimes He comes through theology, sometimes He comes from scientific reasoning and sometimes He comes through poetry. As you pray and your heart is open to God, He comes. BannerFans.com Often a person will complain, "I've prayed and prayed and didn't get what I wanted." Well who said you are supposed to get what you want? Prayer isn't a device to get what you want. Prayer is a means of bringing you to the point where you will accept what God wants. If you're using prayer just for getting what you want, your engaging in an improper use of prayer. To live a full and happy life is to learn to say, "This is what I'd like to have Lord, if You think it's all right for me. But if You don't, then give me what You want me to have or show me what You want me to do." BannerFans.com What is bothering you? What is your difficulty? Just start praying. Fill your mind full of God. Then have the audacity to pray big, daring prayers. What do you want to be? Tell the Lord you want to be that. What do you want to accomplish? Tell Him. What do you want to happen? Tell Him. And believe. Be prepared for Him to tell you no. But also be prepared for Him to tell you yes. Great things happen when you pray. BannerFans.com Power of Prayer OurPrayer Books Magazines Free eBooks Videos Games Donate How to Pray in Times of Trouble You can pray your way through any difficulty. By Norman Vincent Peale My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. Psalm 73:26 Trouble is part of the universe; it is basic. However, one of the great things about this world is that it does not make any difference how disheartening circumstances are, they will ultimately change. Maybe there is no permanency to happiness; but there is no permanency to trouble either. They both pass away. If you can retain enough stick-to-it-iveness in the midst of disheartenment to keep going, you will come out on the other side of any trouble. BannerFans.com The man who knows God knows that there is a deep balance, compensation and philosophy in the universe; that if he has to say, “My flesh and my heart faileth,” he will also say, “God is the strength of my heart.” Because always, if you hold on and keep your feet in a sturdy place and keep your heart substantial, you will come through. That is one way to get new heart when you are disheartened. The other way is very simple one; it is so simple that you will think when I suggest it that I haven’t told you anything. But I have lived long enough to be absolutely sure of this. You can pray your way through any difficulty that the world puts in front of you. BannerFans.com Prayer is the greatest technique God ever gave us. If you will pray and keep on praying and pray some more, there isn’t any difficulty that need dishearten you. You will get your heart back by prayer. If you are in a difficulty right now, if you are discouraged, disheartened about anything, quit talking about it; quit fuming and fretting about it; quit complaining about it; quit going around and trying to get advice about it. Just pray, that is all. It is very simple. Take your trouble, whatever it is, and start praying about it until light comes in your brain and you feel a good old sturdiness in your heart once again. And you will have new heart for all the disheartenment that you will ever face. BannerFans.com If you are disheartened about anything, just pray and keep on praying.
